The Bauhaus philosophy put design in the framework of a social model of “products for everyone.” The cost savings that went along with it did away with anything that was useless for function, justified only by form; in particular, any decoration, which was judged to be decadent. Today, production amply covers our needs. It is no longer a question of producing more, but rather producing better. In this case, better is expressed as much in terms of performance and accessibility as in terms of sense and emotion. At the same time, as the educational level of populations has increased, there has been a development in the need for personalisation. Today, thanks to new materials and new technologies, design can respond to both these levels of expectation without opposing them. Will the industrial model be reconciled with handmade craftsmanship? In an case, the idea people have about this will undeniably be a conveyor of meaning for the purchaser and value added for the producer.
Gérard Laizé.
Managing Director of the VIA.
The theme of this issue of the Innovation Letter will give rise to two parallel exhibitions:
- At the VIA: « Surfaces … », a selection of representative international products – from 15 May to 25 June

REPORTS ON THE FAIRS |
 |
Stockholm Furniture Fair
www.stockholmfurniturefair.com from 8 to 12 February 2006.
Still a lot of freshness is seen in the Scandinavian offerings presented in Stockholm which, as we have already pointed out, prefigures what tomorrow could be the second generation of the number 1 furnisher. At the same times, the influences of the time are felt here as elsewhere, particularly with respect to the comeback of decoration and the reissuing of historical models…

Fairs in January
Paris Furniture Fair (Salon du Meuble de Paris) – www.salondumeuble.com– 5 – 9 January 2006
IMM Cologne - www.imm-cologne.de – 16 – 22 January 2006
Maison & Objet – www.maison-objet.com – 27 – 31 January 2006
Planète Meuble - www.planete-meuble-paris.com – 26 – 30 January 2006.
The beginning of the year 2006 was very busy and exciting for professionals in furniture and decoration: the furniture fairs in Paris, Cologne and Birmingham, and also Maison & Objet.
In Paris, against a background of an inappropriate calendar, as headlines from Libération read, we witnessed a “war of the fairs.” The Paris Furniture Fair, on account of an opening that was too early on 5 January was deprived of the presence of the Latin and Slavic countries that celebrate the Epiphany as well as some Americans and others, including Japanese and other Asians, had not gotten over the holidays at the end of the year or were on vacation. Maison & Objet pursued its expansionist policy.

Decoration and design
Critical view of Claire Jolivet, young designer
Decoration is often considered to be the “degenerate” part of contemporary art. Can the same be said of design too?
It is clear that this question leads to controversy. And this began a long time ago…

MAGNETIC PAINT |
 |
PeintureAimant is paint that looks quite ordinary but is, in fact, magnetisable. In this way walls can be transformed into presentation surfaces using magnetic clamps. This pre-mixed primer paint, with a low lead content and a water base, contains non-corrosive metal particles that can be magnetised.
PeintureAimant can be covered with any other paint without losing its magnetic properties.
This paint can be easily applied with a roller and can be washed with water.

SENSITILE |
 |
SensiTile is an ingenious, attractive and fun material. It comes in the form of tiles that transmit light from one point to another of their surface by internal reflection in very much the same way as optical fibre. The result is a set of ripples on the material’s surface. Any movement around the material will cast a shadow that will be diffused in masses of other places. Any beam of light falling on a SensiTile product will reappear in another part of its surface.
SensiTile propose three types of tiles: Terazzo (concrete), Scintilla (polymer) and Volatil (resin). Available in different sizes, colours and thickness, it can be employed on floors, walls and furniture, both inside and outside.
