Exhibition
Paris Design in mutation at Espace EDF Bazacle, Toulouse, France : 09/11/10 - 21/02/11

Paris / Design in mutation

This exhibition reflects mutations at work today as they appear in the work of eleven designers or collectives, who were selected as forerunners or leaders of the different currents of new generation Parisian design. It also salutes the role of institutional players – design schools, support bodies, exhibition structures, etc. - who have helped to shape and reveal these new talents.
The exhibition received financial support from VIA (Valorization of Innovation in Furnishing), the Municipality of Paris, CulturesFrance, the Fondation EDF Diversiterre (French Electricity), and the Consulate general of France in Quebec.
VIA relations head Michel Bouisson (Paris) was commissioner.

Introduction text to the exhibition
One does not have to be a psychic to realize that a global environmental revolution is going to occur in more or less short order. One can maintain that it has already started. On the other hand, no one knows the outcome. This assertion can also be applied to the current digital revolution, the other major phenomenon whose effects on human societies have yet to be fully assessed. The professions of design and production of what is still known as consumer goods will be particularly exposed to the shockwaves of these two events, which though independent, already intersect with each other.
In Paris, a certain number of designers have already gotten down to business. They understood that they needed to rethink their field, which still rests on the precepts of modern movements. This need applies to a thorough reexamination of its purpose (what to produce, to what end, and by which means) as well as to the body of its methodological tools. Thus, those designers are abandoning the system of classification by major functions and the typologies of the resulting objects in order to take a different look at human activities - each activity considered as a whole and in relation to its own context - and are trying to come up with more reasoned solutions.
This exhibition intends to shine the spotlight on a few of those figures who stand out on the Parisian and international scenes. More aware of their responsibility and jubilantly walking away from beaten tracks, they express themselves through exploratory and prospective approaches.

In the framework of the 10th MONTREAL IN LIGHT festival, which this year salutes Paris, the UQAM Design Centre mounted a show entitled ‘Paris / Design in mutation’, which ran from 16 January to 1st March 2009.

Seminar : ‘Paris / Design in mutation, portrait of a generation’

Nine Parisian designers give short lectures on their work. These presentations, each lasting about ten minutes, illustrate the ways in which creators experience mutation in their practice. They testify to transformations in commissioning, professional practice, production and research – the things that best show the changing character of design practises. The talks enable audiences to pinpoint the similarities and differences that are typical our shared cultural backgrounds.
Venue : Cinémathèque québecoise, Claude-Jutra auditorium (35, boulevard De Maisonneuve, East Montreal / Ph. 514 842-9763)
Date : Friday 16 January 2009

2. Espace Fondation EDF, Paris - France (17/04/09 - 30/08/09)

Following on from the ‘So Watt ! Design in energy’ show in 2007, Fondation EDF Diversiterre on a proposal of the Mairie de Paris, is pursuing its commitment to design and innovation for sustainable development.
In the past thirty years Paris has become a hotbed for a new generation of designers whose work is focused on research and development in prospective design. The Paris Design en mutation show at the Espace Fondation EDF presents works by eleven designers who rank among the most representative of this generation. These creators are not concerned with
aesthetics: their creations anticipate the impact that the changes in ecological balances and energy-use are having on our life styles.
Intelligence, humour and poetry come together to open new ways forward, and enable us to catch glimpses of what the objects that compose living space will be in the near future: an audio-shelf or a door-screen to broadcast and display information and images and create atmosphere, by Jean-Louis Fréchin, an oxygen generator for habitat by Mathieu
Lehanneur, a flying hotel by Jean-Marie Massaud, and even a whimsical multi-socket power point to symbolize ‘wastefulness’ in domestic appliances, by EDF Design R&D…
A 30-minute documentary film accompanies the exhibition, presenting interviews with directors of schools and institutions for the promotion of design, who express their views on current mutations and analyse the ways they influence practical functions.
Paris Design en mutation is a discovery tour of research turned toward the world of tomorrow.

Two exceptional public events

VIA and Fondation EDF Diversiterre have mounted two exceptional public events that aim at stimulating dialogue between designers and representatives of firms, schools and institutions, in an attempt to come to better understanding of the key issues at stake in design today.

Monday 11 May 2009 - 6.30 pm – 8 pm - Design in mutation: seen from the side of big firms
(Download the audio recording in French exclusively)
This first event looks at the ways in which mutations under way in economy, technologies and environmental awareness are re-shaping industrial logic. How major firms are responding and what place they attribute to design in their global strategy and organization? As speakers to relay viewpoints and analyses, we have invited three industrial groups of international standing that represent three key sectors of activity: the EDF group (French Electricity, 2nd world producer of energy), the SEB group (world leader for small household appliances), and the Cauval group (European leader for home furnishing: bedding, seating & kitchenware).
Chairperson: Laurence Salmon (journalist & teacher)
Participants: Isabelle Jalmain, ENERBAT group head (Energy in Buildings & Territories), R&D for EDF, Jacques Alexandre (on reserve), Member of the executive committee in charge of strategy & activities, Frédéric Beuvry, head of design for SEB group, Christian Le Brun, Vice-president of Cauval group.
… as well as designers: Ruedi Baur, Matali Crasset, Delo Lindo, Jean-Louis Fréchin, Jean-Marie Massaud, Gilles Rougon.

Wednesday 13 May 2009 - 6.30 pm – 8 pm - Design in mutation: seen from the side of schools & institutions

(Download the audio recording in French exclusively)
In the framework of the exhibition, a 30 m. film questions design schools and institutions that offer assistance to creation and promote design on ways of anticipating mutations in our day and age, on the influence of these changes on teaching programmes and selection criteria, etc., and on measures adopted to accompany transformations. This second event will use the film to confront points of view and analyses.
Chairperson: Michèle Champenois, journalist
Participants: Alain Cadix, Director ENSCI-Les Ateliers, Pascale Hanoka Boulard, Directress Ecole Camondo, Vaïana Le Coustumer, Teacher representing the Ecole Boulle, Baudoin Colignon & Claire Brunet, Co-directors of the design department at ENS Cachan, Marie Jose Mascioni, Directress ENSAAMA Olivier de Serres, Francis Dumas (on reserve), Director of studies ENSAD, Christine Colin, Inspectress of artistic creation DAP, Minister of Culture & Communication – FIACRE grants, Gérard Laize, General manager VIA, Françoise Jollant-Kneebone, FIACRE grants, Alain Reinaudo, Advisor for visual arts & architecture CulturesFrance, Anne-Marie Sargueil, President IFD, Valérie Guillaume, Curator in chief for heritage, Design service, MNAM/CCI, Anne-Marie Boutin, President APCI.… as well as designers, François Azambourg, Olivier Gassies, François Brument, Machin Machin, Matali Crasset, Jean-Louis Fréchin.
