The exhibition illustrates the 'design & high quality manufacture' approach initiated by VIA in 1994, translating with precision the shared and inseparable values of hand and mind in a contemporary spirit that puts the spotlight on 'discreet talents'.
Valorizing examples include the art of master glaziers as expressed in the limited series of 'Douglas' vases designed by François Azambourg and made by the CIAV (Centre international des arts verriers) at Meisenthal, and the skill of ceramics artisans, used to effect by Guillaume Bardet in the 'Babel' hanging garden produced by the Perimeter gallery. There are also less well known techniques that will delight visitors, such as Damascene hammering, by which effects of matter are obtained by layering fine steel, illustrated by the 'Paracas' dish, designed and made by master craftsman Jean-Louis Hurlin. Among the other pieces on show is the 'Jules' armchair designed by Patrick Jouin for the  Jules Vernes restaurant at the Eiffel Tower in the Paris, which expresses the emergence of savoir-faire allied to advanced technologies and new materials: carbon fibre handled with surpassing skill by the maker D3, formerly a prototype constructor working for the aeronautical and automobile industries.
'Art trades' craftsmen imbue objects with an imitable wealth of details and finishes. Their refined talents put technique at the service of form, which they interpret with boldness and impeccable skill.

By their singular nature, the objects on display in this exhibition respond to a growing demand in contemporary society for lasting values. Many of these techniques call into question the fundamental principles of mass production. Signed, stamped and numbered, their strong and identifiable character is a sure sign of distinction. The will to 'produce better rather than more' remains the intrinsic defining quality of high finish design.

This exhibition will contribute to make the Viaduc des Arts - where the VIA gallery is located -, a Parisian venue for unusual and fruitful collaborations. Putting the spotlight on them is one way of ensuring that precious art trade skills are passed on and inspire vocations among young people.
